Understanding Pigmentation: Causes, Layers, and Risk Factors

While pigmentation is a natural part of our skin’s appearance, uneven pigmentation or hyperpigmentation can occur when the production of melanin becomes irregular, leading to darker or discoloured patches of skin. Hyperpigmentation commonly occurs within the  deepest layer of the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) called the basal layer.

Risk Factors contributing to pigmentation:

  • Sun Exposure: Excessive UV exposure can trigger melanocytes to produce more melanin as a defense mechanism, leading to sunspots, freckles, and other forms of hyperpigmentation.
  • Hormonal Changes: Conditions like pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives can cause hormonal imbalances, leading to conditions like melasma, characterized by dark patches on the skin.
  • Skin Inflammation or Injury: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can develop after skin injuries, such as acne scars, burns, Eczema, Psoriasis or other skin trauma, leading to darker skin patches.
  • Genetics: Some individuals are genetically predisposed to developing pigmentation irregularities.
  • Age: As we age, the skin’s ability to regenerate and repair itself diminishes, increasing the likelihood of age spots and other pigmentation concerns.
  • Medication: Certain prescribed and Over the counter drugs.

Our Treatments and Homecare for Hyperpigmentation

At our aesthetics clinic, we offer a variety of effective treatments designed to reduce and treat pigmentation concerns. These treatments target the root causes of pigmentation, addressing the underlying skin layers to restore a more even skin tone and improve overall skin health.

  • Micro-needling: This treatment involves tiny needles that create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin healing. By enhancing skin regeneration, micro-needling helps fade pigmentation, improve texture, and restore a more youthful appearance. This is often combined with special serums which target the Pigmentation.

  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels use a solution to exfoliate the skin’s outer layer, removing dead skin cells and promoting new cell growth. This treatment helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation by accelerating the skin’s natural exfoliation process and revealing brighter, more even-toned skin beneath.

  • Cosmelan: A medical-grade depigmentation treatment, Cosmelan is specifically designed to reduce melanin production and target stubborn dark spots. This treatment works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for melanin production, providing long-lasting results for conditions such as melasma, sunspots, and age spots.

  • HydraFacial: This non-invasive treatment deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin while targeting pigmentation and discoloration. Using a patented vortex technology, HydraFacial extracts impurities and infuses the skin with serums containing antioxidants and brightening agents to promote a more even skin tone.
